# History of Guacamole

Guacamole has its roots in Aztec civilization, dating back to the 16th century in what is now Mexico. The word "guacamole" comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec language) word *āhuacamolli*, a combination of *āhuacatl* (avocado) and *molli* (sauce). The Aztecs used avocados to create a simple sauce by mashing them, often adding tomatoes, chilies, and other ingredients native to the region.

After the Spanish conquest, the popularity of avocados and guacamole spread throughout Latin America and eventually to the rest of the world. Today, guacamole is a staple in Mexican cuisine and is widely enjoyed as a dip, spread, or topping in many countries, particularly in the U.S.
